The contract of UNC Wilmington’s men’s basketball coach Buzz Peterson has been terminated, according to a university press release. Peterson was entering the final year of a five-year contract.

The news comes on the heels of another disappointing season for the Seahawks. The team went 9-23 this season, finishing last in the CAA. The team also lost 14 straight games this season, a school record for most consecutive losses.

This was the third straight 20-loss season for a UNCW team that lost 21 games in 2011-2012 and 20 games in 2012-2013.

Peterson was never able to improve on the 13-18 record that the team put up in 2010-2011, his first year leading the program. In his four years as head coach, UNCW compiled a 42-82 record.

Before coming to UNCW, Peterson was the head coach at Appalachian State, Tulsa, Tennessee, and Coastal Carolina.

Athletic director Jimmy Bass was unavailable for comment. Updates to follow.
