SGA focuses on Humans of the Dub

With the recent success of popular Facebook account and blog Humans of New York (HONY), UNC-Wilmington’s Student Government Association hopes to put more energy into the universities replica Humans of the Dub.

An initiative that started last year, Humans of the Dub plans to highlight UNCW community members by displaying photographs of unnamed people followed by a small synopsis about that person’s activities. This project hopes to make UNCW community members closer like HONY did for New York City

A post from the WordPress and Instagram account for the initiative on April 20, 2015 shows a female student who plays for the UNCW Women’s soccer team. In the post, the unnamed student discussed the team’s excitement over beating William & Mary.

SGA’s Marketing Committee will be tasked with keeping Humans of the Dub updated and plans to send out committee members to capture the variation of people visible on campus.

“(Committee members) are tasked with finding one person to interview,” said SGA Senator-at-Large and committee member Hannah Daley. “They create a kind-of stock pile of different people so if (members) want to post they can go find a person listed on the google doc (to interview).”

Taking photos for the project is not meant to be like homework, according to Daley. Instead, they encourage committee members to talk to people on campus and seek out interesting stories in a personal way.

The blog will start up again next week and SGA plans to post weekly or daily with the addition pf Facebook page to increase accessibility.

Committee members are also tasked to think outside of the box and seek out students, faculty, staff, and family because according to Weaver, “they are all part of this community of Seahawks” and the “magnitude of success that takes place on-campus and off-campus.”

One entry Daley plans to post surrounds the issue of mental health awareness, which was also a part of SGA President Dan McCord’s address.

“(UNCW sophomore) Gracie Morris, is one of two students here at UNCW who is certified by the National Association of Mental Illness,” Daley said. And although Morris said that she has not been involved with NAMI on campus since the spring, Daley believes she will still get an interesting response.

UNCW is not the only school to mimic the ideas of HONY. North Carolina State University has their own Facebook page entitled Humans of NCSU in a similar format to Humans of the Dub.

Projects like HONY and Humans of the Dub are becoming more popular and attempt to display the wide variety people and the interesting work being done on college campuses and in cities around the world.

“Humans of the Dub serves the purpose to recognize and promote a diverse student body,” said SGA Director of Marketing Kalen Weaver. “As a team we want to help students feel included and valued here at this university; whether through community, athletic, or academic accomplishments we want to advertise our community.”
