Giants fans remorse as Coughlin bids departure

For the past 12 years, people couldn’t mention the New York Giants without thinking of their head coach, Tom Coughlin. After winning two Super Bowls over the course of 12 long, hard, and successful years, Coughlin will no longer be the Giants’ head coach.

Last Tuesday as Coughlin gave his last speech with almost 20 current and former Giants players in attendance, it was an emotional time for many, including Eli Manning who was on the verge of tears, according to The New York Times. The news of Coughlin’s departure not only bothered players but avid fans as well.

“He was always very well respected by his players and former players,” said student and Giants fan Brenna Beggi. “I think there are some big shoes to fill. I’m sad to see him go, but then again things like this happen all the time.”

According to The New York Times, Coughlin preached about some of his favorite football tenets, the selfless team concept, and a coach’s responsibility to prepare players for life after football.

But fans may not have to go long without seeing Coughlin around. According to The New York Times, when Coughlin was asked if he had fulfilled his drive for coaching, he responded, “Not necessarily.” Although he continued to praise the ownership, he did not confirm whether or not he would remain with the franchise.

Although Coughlin stepped down as coach in the meeting last Tuesday, co-owner of the Giants John K. Mara had voiced that the team had been preparing to dismiss him, according to The New York Times.

“All good things have to come to an end sometime,” said Mara to The New York Times. “Tom broached it, but I would say it not a contentious discussion.”

Throughout Coughlin’s speech he thanked many employees, coaches, and players. He specifically talked about Manning with nothing but love and passion.

“He’s what you want your son to be made out of,” said Coughlin to The New York Times.

For the past 12 years many have watched Coughlin perform and lead his team to not one but two Super Bowls. Although fans, players, and coworkers are distraught to see Coughlin leave, many are excited and looking forward to what Coughlin does next.
