Twas the night before move-in day when I stumbled upon a new coffee shop in the final stages of opening to the public. Not only was I excited to move into my new apartment, I was also eager to taste new coffee near UNCW campus. Scooter’s Coffee, located at 1421 College Rd, Wilmington, NC 28403, opened a new location in late August.
I drove to Scooter’s Coffee, excited to try their brews, and found myself staring at a large menu of drinks, teas, smoothies, and food. The menu felt overwhelming with the mass amount of choices covering all of the basic drinks that could be found in a coffee shop. With no rush, I was able to observe the menu items, ask questions, and make my final choice.
“Scoot on through!” the worker said over the intercom.
The seasonal pumpkin spice latte was a must try for me as I have had my fair share of them in the past. The coffee looked delicious in the cup with its orange-tan color, welcoming my taste buds in for the fall themed drink. I had high hopes until my first sip. I was hit with the bold, sweet pumpkin taste that filled my mouth. The fall flavors were overpowering even when I would take time between my sips. The sweet pumpkin overruled the taste of the coffee, leaving little to no room for the nutty natural bean to peek through. The drink tasted like pumpkin, vanilla and cinnamon with milk and a small aftertaste of coffee.
Compared to the other pumpkin spiced lattes that I have enjoyed, the sweet and milky taste was drastic compared to other lattes that I have had before. The price of my drink was $6.37, which is average for an iced latte from other chain coffee locations.
For my first visit, the worker over the intercom suggested a Caramelicious, the Scooter’s Coffee classic drink. The drink started with the taste of coffee beans, a roasted nutty flavor that lingered throughout the whole sip. After the initial coffee taste came the warm salty caramel flavor that balanced out the nutty coffee bean bite. With the mixture of the two, along with the creamy whole milk, the balance was perfect, the coffee delectable. I would recommend this coffee to anyone who is trying Scooter’s Coffee for the first time. The Caramelicious is delicious.
Iced Matcha Latte with Vanilla
Upon receiving the matcha latte from the drive-thru window, I was a bit skeptical as there were little green specks that were floating around in the drink. It looked as though the drink was not properly mixed all the way, even after stirring it with the straw.
“Wow,” I said out loud in my car after taking the first sip.
This matcha latte took a turn for the good. The first sip started with the earthy green taste of the matcha tea that was light in flavor on the tongue. Following came the creamy sweet vanilla milk that had a cool light taste pairing well with the matcha tea. The sweet and perfect drink lingered pleasantly in my mouth. Sip after sip, the flavorful green matcha kept the same consistent delicious goodness. The earthy tea and the sweet cream are appetizing for any matcha latte lover.
Scooter’s Coffee is an excellent place to try new coffee and drinks. The easy, quick and friendly service allowed for a welcoming and comfortable environment. As the location is off College Road, it can be difficult to get into but that does not take away from the overall experience and taste of Scooter’s Coffee.
