A look at the first Marc Elligton Golf Tournament
The First Annual Marc Ellington Memorial Golf Tournament will take place on Sept. 25 in honor of late UNC Wilmington swimming and diving coach Marc Ellington.
Ellington, who was UNCW’s first ever swimming and diving coach, passed away on June 7. His distinctions included winning the Colonial Athletic Association’s “Coach of the Year” award in both 2005 and 2006.
Entry fees for the tournament are $100 for individuals, $400 for teams, and $500 for corporate teams. All funds raised by the event will go towards UNCW swimming and diving. As of Sept. 6, the tournament has 17 entrants, but hopes to see close to 50 by the Sept. 19 registration deadline.
“The money is being raised to support the swimming and diving support fund which assists with the general costs of the program,” said Beau Bunn, event organizer and current diving coach.
Members of the swimming and diving team are also being asked to do their part in raising money and awareness for the event.
“We are [also] asking them to solicit donations to the tournament, for prizes or the silent auction,” Bunn explained.
All green fees are included in the cost. Participants will also receive lunch and dinner, plus a t-shirt and driving range balls. Players will receive water and soda while out on the course.
Hosting the inaugural event is Magnolia Greens Golf Course which is located just west of Wilmington in Leland. The tournament has a 1 p.m. shotgun start time with player registration beginning at 11:30 a.m. and lunch is provided at 12:30 p.m.
