In light of improving conditions related to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, UNC Wilmington (UNCW) will now offer multiple in-person and virtual graduation ceremonies for spring 2021 graduates.

General graduation ceremonies (not separated by school or college) will be held in Trask Coliseum between May 7 and 8. Specific times include Friday, May 7 at 1 p.m.; Friday, May 7 at 5 p.m.; Saturday, May 8 at 9 a.m.; and Saturday, May 8 at 1 p.m.

The virtual ceremony will be available on May 7 at 1 p.m.

“Although the university initially announced a virtual May commencement, improving conditions and the rollout of vaccines have made it possible to consider modified in-person ceremonies. We value the feedback we received through a survey of the Class of 2021, which helped shape plans for the upcoming ceremonies,” as written in the announcement.

Graduates who choose to attend an in-person ceremony will receive one ticket for themselves and one guest ticket. Graduates and their guests will sit together and be required to wear face masks and remain socially distanced from others.

Seating will be randomly assigned throughout Trask Coliseum. Each in-person ceremony is first-come, first-serve and graduates must register and RSVP prior through their commencement registration account.

Additionally, each graduate will be recognized individually, whether they choose virtual or in-person attendance.

“Graduates’ names will be called individually with a slide displaying their name, degree earned, Latin honors (if applicable) and a personal photo. Graduates will be asked to stand, if they are able, to be recognized when their name is called,” as stated on the commencement website.

All ceremonies and departmental celebrations will be livestreamed and fully closed-captioned for remote viewing.
