Lady Hawks end drought with sweep over Cougars

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW women’s basketball (5-12) ended their 11-game drought with a weekend sweep over the College of Charleston Cougars (6-8), marking their first CAA wins of the season.  

UNCW traveled to Charleston on Friday evening to play the Cougars in game one of the series. The Lady Hawks were losing by three at halftime but battled hard in the second half, at one point going on a 20-9 run. They shot 39% from the field and 28.6% from behind the arc, but it was their season-high rebounding performance that resulted in 21 second-chance points that helped lead to the Seahawk 68-66 victory. 

Junior guard Za’Nautica Downs led UNCW in the road win with 17 points, all of which she scored in the second half. Senior forward Carol-Anne Obusek followed with 11 points and 13 rebounds. Junior guard Camille Downs chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds, while junior guard Rinnah Green contributed seven points in her first career start, as the Seahawks tried out their ninth starting lineup of the season. 

The Cougars were led by junior guard Tyler Collins with 18 points and eight assists, freshman guard Chelsea Wooten with 14 points and four rebounds and junior guard Madison Taylor who chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds.  

The Lady Hawks traveled back to Wilmington with the Cougars in tow to play game two of the series on Sunday in Trask Coliseum. UNCW earned the sweep with a 61-54 victory.  

The Seahawks outshot the Cougars from the field 34% to 27.9%, and from behind the arc, 21.4% to 17.2%. They also outrebounded the Cougars for the second straight game, 49-30. Obusek and Downs led the team once again, Obusek with 20 points and 11 rebounds, and Downs with 17 points and five rebounds. Obusek now has nine double-doubles on the season and has scored in double figures for nine consecutive games. She has also led the team in rebounding for 11 consecutive games. Downs has scored in double figures for 11 consecutive games. Camille Downs was just shy of reaching a double-double herself with nine points and nine rebounds.  

UNCW will close out the regular season with a rescheduled two-game home series against Towson on Thursday, March 4 and Friday, March 5 in Trask Coliseum. Both games are set to tip off at 5:30 p.m.
