Tips and tricks for staying safe in college nightlife

There is no question as to whether or not drugs and alcohol are available to students here at UNC Wilmington. Some partake in these extra-curriculars regularly, some do not, and others dabble in between. Because drinking and taking recreational drugs can feel like such a prominent part of college culture, it is important for everyone, participants or not, to get educated on the safety surrounding these activities. Below are some tips and tricks for everyone, sober or not, to stay safe here at The Dub.

Make good choices. This seems obvious, I know. However, it can be easy to get caught up in the moment and excitement of going out and forget what it means to be responsible. Eat before you drink. Stay hydrated beyond alcoholic beverages. Know your limit. If you feel uneasy, take a break. Have a ride. Do not drive under the influence. Call an Uber.

Look out for your friends. If your friends are going too hard, do not be afraid to call them out on it or voice your concern. Stand up for them if they are in a situation they do not want to be in. Use the buddy system. Make sure everyone gets home safely. If someone has hit their limit, look after them, and be aware of what point should be reason for genuine concern.

Do not do anything you do not want to do. Again, this seems obvious, but it can be easy to forget in a social setting. Never take a drink you do not want. Never do a drug you are not comfortable with. Never get in a car with someone you do not want to. Never leave the party or your friends if it feels like a bad idea. Follow your intuition and make the best choices you can for that moment.

Partying does not have to be for you. If going out and getting drunk does not feel appealing to you, remember that you do not have to. There are plenty of other ways to be social here in Wilmington, and plenty of other Seahawks that do not want to drink as well. There will always be people like you out there. If you do like to drink and go out, stay safe and enjoy. And remember, there are many people who fall in the middle.

There are so many options every weekend in Wilmington that are filled with other students looking to have a good time. Take advantage of that opportunity, we deserve it! School is hard. This point in the semester is stressful. Finals are coming up. We work hard and deserve to unwind in some way or another. When the time is right, stay safe and enjoy yourself.
