There is a lot of uneasiness in anticipation of this year’s midterm elections. One of the key races to determine the makeup of the nation’s Senate will be right here in North Carolina. Senator Richard Burr is not running for reelection, which leaves an empty seat that many North Carolina Republicans and Democrats are fighting to fill. Since the Senate is split 50-50 between both parties (two Independents caucusing with Democrats), every seat counts in this election. Without a clear predecessor to Burr, North Carolina might become a pivotal state in November’s vote.
While it is feasible to eliminate the filibuster as it exists now, many senators, including Manchin and other Democrats, are hesitant to destroy what they see as a key tool of the minority party. With Democrats' Senate and House prospects looking mixed going into the 2022 midterm elections, several Democratic senators are worried that Republicans would be able to do much more damage than they did during the Trump administration if the filibuster is removed.
There are questions regarding how this will affect the 2020 presidential race, as this is said to be an advantage to those on the right. Trump’s top pick, Amy Coney Barrett, was formally nominated in the White House Rose Garden on Saturday, just one day after Ginsburg was lying in state at the U.S. Capitol. The formal Senate confirmation hearings are to take place beginning on October 12, as there seems to be a mad dash by the GOP to place her on the high court as soon as possible.
With the 2020 general election only two months away, organizations like NextGen North Carolina (an offshoot of national organization NextGen America) are helping to inform and guide young voters about the election and why they should vote.
