South Carolina considers abortion bill

South Carolina is trying to pass a bill that would require women to see an ultrasound of their babies before they decide to abort them. Set to be the first bill of its kind in the nation, will other states be pressured to follow suit?

The function of Bill S.0084 is to mandate that a woman view the child (or children) she is about to abort.

In an interview with WordPress.com, South Carolina Rep. Greg Delleney (R), the bill’s key sponsor, said, “I’m just trying to save lives and protect people from regret and inform women with the most accurate non-judgmental information that can be provided.”

Mya Miller, who has had an abortion said: “It is an egregious act of emotional assault. Whatever happened to a woman’s right to choose?”

The bill also states that before the procedure is legally allowed to take place, the woman seeking an abortion must first submit a signed document. That document reads as follows: “You have the right to review printed materials prepared by the State of South Carolina which describe fetal development, list agencies which offer alternatives to abortion and describe medical assistance benefits which may be available for prenatal care, childbirth and neonatal care.”

Clair Pasqualoni, a pediatric nurse, said, “Although women have the right to view abortion and childbirth material, they also have the right not to.”

Introduced to the House Senate Committee Jan. 9, the bill awaits final approval by South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford.
