Commentary — Tournament a treat for UNCW golfers

Home.

For most collegiate sports, a home game, match, meet or event is a fairly common thing.

And it’s nice to have that home-field, -court, -course advantage. A friendly crowd, familiar food, a better night’s sleep, knowing the athletic venue.

But for collegiate golfers, it’s largely a life on the road.

Travel here. Travel there. Just keep on trucking.

That’s why it must be nice for the golfers to have that one event of their own this weekend at the Landfall Tradition.

No worrying about classes, sleep, planes or vans. It’s just a trip across town.

Everything’s nice and familiar.

“I’m just ready to get out and play,” said senior golfer Derek Brown. “It’s a big event, you know where you can hit the ball and where you can’t. Where the trouble’s at. You know how the greens are, how they break. It’s a couple of advantages that can help you out.”

The athletes would appreciate a little help from the community this weekend. A clap here, a little support there means a lot to them.

“You would approach the tournament slightly differently… this being your own tournament; you get more support from the school,” said sophomore Tony DiBitetto. “You don’t feel not that you’re on the pedestal, but you feel more positive about yourself.”

“We do get a little bit of a gallery, we had some people last year, I don’t know if we’ll have someone this year. I’d think so since the school and community provide great support.”

The players are excited to play at Landfall and hope to bring a little excitement to the home folks.

“We’re all going to have a positive attitude; getting our games in the final stages,” DiBitetto said. “Hopefully we’ll play like we know how to and come out with the championship.”

Brown agrees. “I think winning’s our main goal. It’s our tournament, we tied last year and we should’ve won last year. The team is starting to get real close, come around and I think we have a real chance to win.”
