Men’s soccer watches … and waits

For the men’s soccer team, it’s white-knuckle time.

A week ago, the Seahawks looked like they were in great shape for finishing in the CAA’s top six and earning a conference tournament berth.

UNCW still looks to be in fairly good shape, but they’re not sitting as pretty as they’d like to be.

Not long ago, the Seahawks looked like a lock. A James Madison loss was all the team needed. And the Dukes, whom UNCW clobbered 4-1, hosted ODU and nationally ranked William & Mary.

A cinch, right?

Wrong.

JMU pulled off a pair of wins, including a 4-1 shellacking of the Indians, to keep the pressure on the Seahawks.

“I was in (my office) yesterday, waiting for the stuff on the Internet to come through (with the score). And I kind of fell of the chair when it came through.” UNCW head coach Aidan Heaney said. “It was a pretty emphatic victory not many thought they would win 4-1. So I’m sure their confidence is up.”

Suddenly the Seahawks, who have played all their CAA games, hold a 4-4-1 record and a two-point lead over JMU and Hofstra (3-3-2), who are tied for sixth place.

So for UNCW to make the tournament, either JMU or Hofstra has to lose or tie in their season finales. JMU hosts third-place George Mason, while Hofstra hosts 10th-place Drexel.

“It’s out of our hands,” Heaney said. “There’s too much talent in this conference for only six teams to make it.”
