Golf teams end fall on upbeat note

The weather defined almost everyone’s description of “perfect”.

But the final day of the Landfall Tradition marked the end of the fall season for both of UNCW’s golf squads.

The men’s and women’s felt reached the winter break on an upbeat note after an autumn that’s been trying at times.

“It’s been an up-and-down fall. We started first and then we struggled. We’ve started to turn around,” said junior Brian Joyce, whose squad finished fourth behind Minnesota, Ohio State and Tennessee. “We’re starting to gel together. The putts are starting to fall. Everybody’s getting more consistent across the board.”

The women’s squad suffered through early season struggles, including a disappointing 16th place finish in the season-opening Mason-Rudolph Women’s Golf Classic in late Sept. However, the Seahawks are ready for spring to get here as quickly as possible after a sixth place in the Landfall Tradition’s very tough field along with a 10th-place showing in the Lady Paladin Invitation in its last outing.

“I think we did pretty well considering the teams that were here. It was a nice way to end the season,” junior Becky Berzonski said. “We finished real well in this tournament, I think, and it’s too bad the season is over. Everybody is ready to take a break and look forward to the spring season.” “(It’s) been a real confidence-booster. … It was a rough start in the first few tournaments, but playing well in the last two has been a real confidence-booster.” Berzonski said.

The squads will largely lift weights while they wait for the renewal of play in the late winter and look to defend their conference titles.

The women’s team returns to action Feb. 27 at the Pinehurst Challenge. The men tee it up on Mar. 5 at the St. Croix Challenge in the Virgin Islands.

“We’ll lift the weights pretty hard,” Joyce said of the off season. “I saw some good things this week, so we’ll bring that with us into the spring.”
