Women’s Hoops Notebook — UNCW climbing up CAA standings
UNCW’s women’s basketball squad captured its third and fourth victories in a row with a 61-51 victory over James Madison on Jan. 22 and an 80-69 triumph at Va. Commonwealth on Jan. 25 to up its record to 9-7 overall and 4-3 in the CAA.
The streak put the Seahawks in a four-way third-place tie in the conference standings on Jan. 26 along Delaware, George Mason and Drexel. The quartet sit two games behind traditional power Old Dominion and Hofstra, who feature 6-1 league records.
Against VCU, the Seahawks held a 26-point halftime lead and withstood a Ram rally.
Hosting JMU’s Dukes, UNCW rallied from a nine-point deficit in the second half for the victory. The Seahawks held JMU scoreless over the last 4:32.
“You should never give up. We’re a great team. We’ll always be there for each other,” senior guard Jennifer Kapper said.
After opening the CAA season with three straight losses, the Seahawks find themselves in position for a high seed in the conference tournament.
“It helps a lot, because a lot of teams have been losing games that they shouldn’t have been,” senior forward Tracy Morgan said. “It’s an even race this year. Heads up, anybody can win.”
Isom-metrics: Guard Lindsay Isom came up with two big second-half baskets that sparked the Seahawks over James Madison.
Twice the sophomore stole the ball away from the Dukes after the visitors snared a defensive rebound, and put the ball back in for a basket.
Making dates: Opening the CAA season, the Seahawks found themselves worried about momentum. Until the last three games of the season, UNCW’s schedule is dominated by road games.
The Seahawks don’t even have two straight games at home until late February.
“With two consecutive ones at home, you’ve got a chance to build momentum, but instead you’ve got to do it all over again on the road,” UNCW coach Ann Hancock said. “We’ve got to take care of business (on the road).”
