McKeon Highlights Baseball Banquet
UNCW baseball’s Spring Training Banquet showed that the Seahawks eye a higher level.
Kicking off the start of the new season a year after reaching the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history, the Banquet packed in the Hilton Riverside’s Ballroom. Florida Marlins manager Jack McKeon was the keynote speaker as the festivities honored UNCW athletics founding father Bill Brooks.
McKeon, who managed the Marlins to a surprise World Series victory in 2003, kept the audience on the edge of their seats as he spoke of his many experiences in the Major Leagues. Through his long career, McKeon managed 1628 games, winning 845 of them. He spoke of taking over the Marlins’ magical run along with lifetime thrills such as coaching the likes of Tony Gwynn, visiting the President George W. Bush in the White House and his friendship with baseball great Yogi Bera.
McKeon, whose grandson Zack Booker is a freshman on the squad, also focused on UNCW.
“I’m impressed with the progress that the university has made,” McKeon said. “UNCW has a great academic program and athletic program, and that is a direct credit to the athletic director and the coaches.”
McKeon then addressed the players. He challenged them to make a game plan on how to achieve their personal goals. He told them to get good grades and to respect their parents, coaches and teammates. He said to pick out good friends and to develop a good attitude.
He finished his challenge to the players by telling them, “Your dreams can come true just like mine if you have pride in your ability, take advantage of it and work hard.” He then quoted the Ray Kroc, the man who turned McDonald’s into a national chain and former San Diego Padres owner when he said, “Persistence is the key to success.”
The exciting evening was kicked off with a highlight video of last year’s postseason that on many occasions evoked applause from the crowd.
Last season’s team awards were then announced to standing ovations. Brad Overton, drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies, received the Most Outstanding Pitcher Award. Returning senior outfielder, Chip Grawey won the Best Offense award and Jamie Hemmingway, drafted by the Atlanta Braves, garnered the Most Valuable Player Award.
Next the 2004 coaches and players were introduced, along with the goals of the upcoming season.
“Our expectations are continuing to rise,” Coach Mark Scalf said. “Our team goals are to win every series, to win 40 games, to win the CAA regular season and conference championships and to compete in Omaha (Neb.) in the College World Series.”
Coach Scalf then changed the atmosphere of excitement and determination to a mood of seriousness and admiration as he honored legendary Bill Brooks for his accomplishments and hard work in building the UNCW baseball program.
