UNCW womens’ hoops finish season with homestand
The good news: UNCW’s women’s basketball team ends its regular season with a three-game homestand.
The bad news: The Seahawks enter the trio of key matchups with a four-game losing streak.
UNCW battles Virginia Commonwealth (Feb. 26 at 7 p.m.), Drexel (Feb. 29 at 2 p.m.) and Hofstra (Mar. 5 at 7 p.m.) in the final stretch as the squad jockeys for a strong seeding in the CAA Tournament, which runs March 11-13 at Old Dominion.
“It’s a great thing to have three games at the end of the season, especially since we’re fighting position,” senior guard Cherie Lea said. “We play better when we’re around our fans, so it’s a big thing for us because we need those wins.”
The Seahawks hope the stretch will shake off the recent string of defeats, which sunk the team down to 12-12 overall, 7-8 in the CAA. The slide included a two-game roadtrip to the Mid Atlantic.
The losses placed the Seahawks in a three-way tie for fifth place with Delaware and Drexel. UNCW sits only a game behind fourth-place VCU.
“It’s a lot of drama,” senior forward Tracy Morgan said before the road trip. “It could be a break or make. Of course we want to win out no matter what, because if we win out, the higher in the standings (we’ll be) and we’ll enter the tournament a little more relaxed.”
Perennial power ODU, which has won the CAA every year it has been in it, sits atop the league with a 14-1 mark after the Feb. 22 games. George Mason and Hofstra will battle it out for second place in the final weeks. Both squads post 10-5 marks.
Producing a strong tournament run won’t be out of the question for UNCW. The Seahawks beat George Mason earlier in the season and played Old Dominion competitively in both meetings this year.
But UNCW needs to shake off its slump. The Seahawks finished their road trip with a 66-59 defeat at Delaware on Feb. 22. The Seahawks, despite 25 fouls and 21 turnovers, held a 50-43 lead with 5:29 remaining before the Blue Hens rampaged on a 15-1 run.
On Feb. 20, William & Mary stopped the Seahawks 70-63.
Which puts pressure on the Seahawks heading into the final games.
“We’re just going to try to play as a team and play with as much enthusiasm and excitement that we play in our big games like when we play Old Dominion and Delaware and all them,” Morgan said.Lea said, “I think for the seniors it’s getting emotional because these are our last five games, but we’re trying to keep it business as usual. We come in, practice and prepare for each game.”
