Movie Review:”The Butterfly Effect” flutters into theaters
The “Butterfly Effect” is a sci-fi drama starring Ashton Kutcher, Amy Smart and Melora Walters. This movie was written and directed by Eric Bress and J. Mackye Gruber. When Evan (Kutcher) was a young kid he would experience blackouts and could not remember certain events during his childhood. His mother (Walters) made him keep a journal to document his daily activities in hopes of preventing these blackouts. Later Evan is a young adult in college studying Psychology and trying to discover who he really is. One day while reading his childhood journals he recalled a painful event that occurred during one of his blackouts. As it turns out, he had blacked out harmful memories. However, he soon discovers that he is not just remembering these experiences, he’s reliving them. After the troubled past that led to the unfortunate death of his girlfriend, (Smart) he decides to use his “journal technique” to go back in time to prevent her untimely death. However, when he awakens he realizes that he has drastically altered his own future. He does not seem to be able to grasp the impact this change has on many lives. But another unfortunate event leads him to travel back in time again and the story unfolds. The title “The Butterfly Effect” implies the theory that if a butterfly flaps its wings it leads to a domino effect of changes that lead to a tragic event that has a significant impact on the world. Every time Evan travels back to his childhood to right a wrong or change something for the better, something else goes wrong. Therefore, he continues to alter the past in hopes of achieving a suitable life. So, the story begs the question, “How many times will he travel back to his childhood until he wakes up with a future he can live with?” Kutcher does a good job as he displays an acting stretch that breaks away from his normal slapstick comedy routine. The rest of the cast also did well in this film because there were several actors that had to play multiple characters in all of Evan’s alternate lives. The movie was a bit long winded but it does grip the audience’s attention, peak their interest and keeps them in anticipation of how it will end. The ending is definitely worth the wait. This is a dark movie that borders on the genre of being a horror film; therefore potential viewers should be cautioned that this movie is only likeable as a matter of taste. There are several horrible things that take place throughout the movie that might disgust some audiences. However, most audience members will enjoy the adventure, suspense and mystery of this perplexing thriller.
