Rivalry

The opinion expressed in a column (Oct. 28) about UNCW’s rival(s), or lack there of, was pretty much correct. With ECU basketball jumping ship from the CAA to Conference USA, the opperitunity to play the hated Pirates has gone. In fact, I would bet that most younger students were not even aware of a past rivalry with our collegues (I use that term loosely) up the road in Greenville.

So, after the ECU exit, we were left searching for an institution that we could love to hate. I truly believe that in basketball, College of Charleston could certainly fulfill our desires to utterly and unequivically hate someone, especially after their less than tasteful antics on our home floor a few years back.

But, and there is always a “but”, it seems that our athletic department has dropped the ball on this budding rivalry, consistantly scheduling our games with C of C during the holiday break. With our students out of town, it becomes a bit difficult to build that much needed rivalry, because let’s face it, the community fans are just not going to get that rowdy. I urge the athletic department to consider the calendar when scheduling games with College of Charleston.
