Twelve teams qualified for this year’s tournament, finishing with a regular season record of .500 or better.
The tournament boasts four undefeated teams that finished the regular season at 5-0, winning their respective conferences. Five teams enter the postseason with four wins, and three teams squeaked into the tournament with three wins.
The most impressive teams during the regular season were Team Ramrod and the Retirement Squad. Ramrod finished undefeated in what proved to be the toughest conference in the league, beating all but one of its opponents by 20 points or more. Three teams from the Pink division, Team Ramrod, Shaolyn Warriors and the Dehavens, reached the quarterfinals of the tournament.
The Retirement Squad did just that: retired every team it played by over ten points. The Green division sent three teams to the playoffs, Retirement Squad, Alligator Snapping Turtles and Stankonia, but only the “Squad” made into the quarterfinals.
As for the players, here is a breakdown of which players shined at their respective positions during the regular season: At point guard, Shelton Langdon (Team Ramrod), and Brandon Ausley (Suprise Me) were standouts the entire season, controlling the ball for their teams and scoring points.
At shooting guard, James Baker (Team Ramrod), and Nick Dunbar (Retirement Squad) were lights out for their undefeated teams. Both are extremely smart players with a deadly jump shots.
At wing, Travis Corpening (Saywhat) was a one man show. His athletic ability allows him to dominate any game, making him the most likely choice for league most valuable player.
At forward, Ryan Valente (Shaolyn), and Steve Nelson (Primetime) were forces in the paint.
Lastly, at center, Tom Bruin (Shaolyn), and Kendrick Brown (Retirement Squad) were dominate men in the middle, blocking shots and rebounding.
So who is the best team? It’s a toss up, and we will find out soon enough. But if a prediction had to be made, Team Ramrod would have to be the choice.
The Recreation league championship will be played at 7:30 p.m. today in the SRC. The overwhelming favorites to win the tournament is CBA-Allstars, led by tremendous athlete Brian Grissom.
