“MATTAPONI SPRING: THE NEW HOME FOR COLLEGIATE GOLF IN VIRGINIA”

With two major college tournaments scheduled in its first year of operation, Mattaponi Springs Golf Club has quickly become the new home for collegiate golf in Virginia. On October 2-4, Mattaponi Springs and Virginia Commonwealth University will host the Mattaponi Springs Collegiate Shootout, boasting an impressive field that includes perennial powerhouses UNC-Wilmington, Wake Forest and ACC standouts University of Maryland, University of North Carolina, and Virginia Tech. Amateurs can play with their favorite college team during the College-Am on October 2. The Golf Channel’s College Golf Central will cover the collegiate action, beginning at 8 a.m. on October 3. Golfers interested in participating in the College-Am can contact VCU Head Coach Matt Ball at (804) 828-3027. Two weeks later, Mattaponi and the Virginia State Golf Association host the oldest state intercollegiate event in the country-the Virginia State Intercollegiate Championship-on October 16-17. Since its humble beginnings in 1950, the tournament has featured some of the best college golf in Virginia. This year, the Intercollegiate Championship features the Commonwealth’s top Division 2 and 3 colleges such as Randolph-Macon College, Hamden-Sydney College and defending champion Washington & Lee. By hosting the Shootout and the Intercollegiate Championship in its first year of operation, Mattaponi Springs is making an immediate impact in the Virginia and national golf communities.

“The fact that Mattaponi Springs has been selected as the host site for these two prestigious events in its first year of existence is a testimony to the commitment to perfection and attention to detail that the ownership has dedicated in creating a course of this magnitude,” said Mattaponi Springs Director of Golf Mac Ellett. “We hope that all of the young people that we host will enjoy and appreciate the effort and commitment that has gone into the creation of such a fantastic facility.”

These tournaments reflect Mattaponi’s commitment to “grow the game” by supporting collegiate and youth golf programs. Local colleges such as VCU and R-MC frequently practice at Mattaponi and its premier practice facilities. In addition to collegiate athletics, Mattaponi continues to support Caroline High School’s first golf team as its host location and practice area. Other area schools such as Hanover and Atlee Elmont High Schools also use the facility.

“The entire Mattaponi Staff is excited to be the host site for Hanover High School and Caroline High School for all of their team matches,” said Ellett. “We are excited to be able to contribute both to our community and the game of golf by hosting free of charge our local high schools and college’s team matches and practice sessions. Mattaponi feels that by providing our facility for free to these institutions the game of golf will continue to grow and instill the honesty and integrity that golf requires into all of the young people we support.”

Since opening in November of 2004, Mattaponi Springs has received acclaim as one of the best new courses in the country. The 6,937 yard, par 72 course was designed by Bob Lohmann, designer of the Merit Club-host site of the 2000 U.S. Women’s Open.

Billed as the “pure golf experience,” Mattaponi offers golf unencumbered by encroaching development. With its wildly undulating terrain, Mattaponi blends nature and a masterful, meticulous design to provide golfers of all levels with challenging, yet exceedingly playable environment.
