The White Ribbon Campaign

Hello Editor:

I called last week, but no one has returned my call. Nevertheless, I am once again reaching out to our campus paper to cover an important issue. Please contact my office at 962-3119.

As you may know, October is national Domestic Violence Awareness Month. During this month colleges and universities throughout the nation provide programs and services, which are designed to heighten awareness and educate students regarding the negative consequences of alcohol abuse and violence against women. One such way UNCW will be participating in this national effort is through the White Ribbon Campaign (WRC).

The White Ribbon Campaign began in 1991 in Canada on the anniversary of the 1990 “Montreal Massacre” where a male engineering student murdered 14 women at a Montreal University before committing suicide. The initial campaign was an effort to encourage men to show their support by wearing white ribbons at schools, churches, shops, and places of employment. As the campaign became highly visible, men’s violence against women became a subject of public discussion and debate. During White Ribbon Week in 1993, it was estimated that one in nine Canadian men were wearing white ribbons, including the Prime Minister and other prominent national figures. The larger goal, to develop a nationwide men’s anti-violence network, is well underway.

We currently have several males/male groups planning this year’s events. In an attempt to support them and draw attention to their efforts, please forward the attached flyer to all students/student groups with whom you have access. Additional information regarding ribbon pick-up locations is forthcoming. If you have additional questions, do not hesitate to contact me.
