Digital Underground set to perform at Rox nightclub

The alternative hip hop group Digital Underground is set to perform at Rox Nightclub in downtown Wilmington Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 10 p.m. Hailing from Oakland, C.A., Digital Underground is known for its outrageous costumes, alter egos and hit single “The Humpty Dance.”

Digital Underground has featured a number of different members, but rapper Shock-G has remained the root of the group. Their music was immediately set apart from the political and gangster rap music popular in the early 90s by using Parliament-Funkadelic samples that defined the group’s bizarre and funky style. Digital Underground’s gold recording, “This is an EP Release,” includes a song with rapper Tupac Shakur.

The animated hip-hop tandem Brown Co. is anticipated to open the show Wednesday for a large crowd. Brown Co. consists of two local rappers, DunDee and Haji P, who are currently working on producing their own record.

“We’re not your standard rappers,” Brown Co. member Haji P. said. “Our music resembles Digital Underground’s, so that’s probably why we were selected to open for the legendary group. When we’re on stage you know you’ve got a friend, and unlike most rap groups, we’re not mad at anyone.”

Tickets are now on sale at Etix.com, Buddha’s Belly, Expressions, Yellow Dog Disc and CD Alley for $20. Doors will open at 8 p.m. and the show will begin at 10. For more information, call Rox Nightclub at 343-9090.
