INTRAMURAL SPORTS:
School is back in session, and so are campus intramurals. The UNCW campus plays host to 11 different intramural sports this fall including soccer, volleyball, flag football and outdoor basketball. Intramurals are not only a chance for students to rekindle their competitive spirit, they present the opportunity to meet new people and get involved in your favorite sports.
“Intramurals are a great way to get involved on campus,” UNCW senior Kelly Smith said. “They gave me the opportunity to play team sports that I never got the chance to play in high school … plus it is always fun playing co-ed intramurals. They [intramurals] are a great way to meet new people and also a good way to stay active.”
Don’t know how to sign up? No problem. Go to http://www.uncw.edu and click on current students; under the campus life section, click on campus recreation. From there, click on intramural registration, and login using your UNCW e-mail address and password. Click on the activity you are interested in and click the proceed button. You can sign up a team by clicking on the sign-up button and then the create button under team.
“Campus intramurals gives you the opportunity to play team sports like soccer or basketball that normally would be more difficult to play because you have to round people up to play them. It’s also fun to have a little healthy competition,” UNCW sophomore Josh Burke said.
If you don’t have a team already put together, you can still sign up as a free agent. Sign up by clicking on the add button under free agent after clicking on the activity you are interested in participating in. However, signing up as a free agent does not secure you a spot on a team. It puts your name on a list that is given to team captains at the preseason team captains meeting, allowing them to pick you up if they need additional players.
If no one contacts you about being added to a team, you can contact the department of campus recreation for a list of the team captains.
Sign-ups for soccer, outdoor tennis, kickball, outdoor basketball and sand volleyball begin August 23 with play beginning either August 12 or 19, depending on the sport. For more information and a calendar of this fall’s events, you can visit the campus recreation Web site at http://www.uncw.edu/stuaff/camprec.
