City Limits Saloon Opens In Downtown Wilmington

City Limits Saloon, which opened at 28 Front Street in downtown Wilmington in July, is Wilmington’s only downtown country club.

“City Limits is trying to get a new crowd downtown, bring a lot of people that normally don’t come downtown,” said Jimmy Johnson, bar manager of City Limits. “When you walk in you notice there’s a lot of bright colors, a lot of signs and everything. It’s just a really happy atmosphere, really ‘lets to the bar and dance and ride the bull and get drunk’ kind of thing.”

The club features two bars downtown, with beer tubs downstairs and in the upstairs room. Dancing on the bar is encouraged, and downstairs features a mechanical bull.

“We have a great little upstairs room where you can take a break from the dance or something, just sit down and chill,” said Johnson. “We have an upstairs room with a beer girl and we have a massive projection screen and you’re also able to go up there and still check out the downstairs area cause there’s windows that open up.”

“City Limits is different than what else is downtown. It’s a fun change,” said Kara Beane, a senior at UNCW.

Thursdays are college night and are 18 and older. Fridays and Saturdays are 21 and older. Prices are $3 for members, $5 for guests, and $10 for those under 21. They also hold some teen nights.

“We do a special Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays called Donkey Punch,” said Johnson. “It’s our home brew, and it tastes like punch and comes in a 32-ounce boot and you get to keep the boot. And we also have various beer and liquor specials just depending on the day.”

Bikini Bullriding on Thursday nights draws a big crowd. Johnson said results are based on crowd response. First and second place winners receive cash prizes, as well as gift certificates and gift bags from spas, surf shops and other local sponsors. After six weeks, the winners compete against each other for a cash prize.

Thursday nights are also karaoke night with DJ Jason Jackson in the upstairs room.

City Limits Saloon in Wilmington is the same concept as City Limits Saloon in Raleigh.

“Wilmington’s a great town,” said Johnson. “You got a lot of great people here and the surrounding areas as well, and we are starting to get a little bit of that crowd as well, on the outskirts of Wilmington, other parts of Wilmington coming down as well. And that’s exactly what we wanted to do, have everyone come down and have a good time.”
