Real Life Scandal Hits the Silver Screen in “Hollywoodland”

As the tag line of “Hollywoodland” states, “Living in Hollywood can make you famous, dying in Hollywood can make you a legend.”

“Hollywoodland” is inspired by the real-life death of actor George Reeves. Reeves was the star of the 1950s TV series “The New Adventures of Superman.” On June 16, 1959, just three days before his wedding, George Reeves went to bed after entertaining guests in his home. Moments later shots rang out and Reeves was found dead from a bullet to the head in his bedroom. Police and guests concluded that Reeves had committed suicide. Family and friends blamed his failing career as a possible motive. The actor’s mental health was also questioned because he had recently suffered a concussion in a car accident. His mother, however, refused to believe that he had committed suicide and decided to hire a private detective to investigate the death. Reeves was not cremated for three years as investigation stretched on. The official cause of death is still listed as suicide, but scandal surrounds the case to this day.

The film follows the private detective, played by Academy Award-winner Adrien Brody, as he explores Hollywood secrets and uncovers a long time affair between Reeves, played by Ben Affleck, and the wife of a powerful studio executive.

“Hollywoodland” is rated R and opens worldwide Sept. 8.
