More extreme ‘MXC’
Spike TV’s “MXC” is back for a fifth season with more preposterous commentary and crazy games.
“MXC,” for those who don’t know, is what Spike TV calls a “ridiculously funny action game show.” The show’s footage is taken from a Japanese game show called “Takeshi’s Castle,” and the voiceovers are done by American comedic actors Victor Wilson, Christopher Darga, Mary Scheer and John Cervenka.
The first episode of the new season pits the Christian Right against Gay Rights in activities reminiscent of American Gladiator; such activities include the “Rotating Surfboard of Death” and “Dope on a Rope.”
One of the executive producers, Paul Abeyta, said he knew all these people from their work in The Groundlings, which is an improvisational comedy and acting group based in L.A.
Abyeta said, “There are a lot of actors in this town,” so he had to make sure he picked just the right people for the cast. Abeyta said that after he picked the cast, he “took [the show] to five different networks and got five different offers,” but ultimately took the offer from Spike TV because they seemed the most interesting and excited about the program.
“Mary, Vic, Chris and John are funny; they know where the jokes are,” Abeyta said. He also said they never go for the joke they write and what comes out is naturally funny.
The co-hosts in the show are Vic Romano and Kenny Blankenship, voiced by Wilson and Darga, respectively. Romano said, “I enjoy it a lot being here from the beginning,” and Abeyta, Scheer, Cervenka and Wilson all jokingly agree that Darga IS Kenny Blankenship.
Scheer has the toughest job, however, as she is the voice for all female parts in the show, and she oftentimes has to have conversations with herself. Scheer doesn’t have any one character like the others do but jokes, “The invisibility brings you power.”
Cervenka does the voices for Captain Tenneal and Guy Le Douche as well as various contestants. Regarding the jokes on the show, Cervenka said “We really do go after everyone, but we are just having fun.”
The first episode of the fifth season of “MXC” airs on Spike TV on Friday, Nov. 10 at 12 a.m., and the first season of “MXC” is now available on DVD.
