UNCW’s new spirit rock to be unveiled during ‘Teal Day’
UNCW has recently acquired a new sprit rock located next to Wagoner Dining Hall. Weaver-Cooke, the contractors of the on-campus apartments Seahawk Village and Landing and the new residence hall, Seahawk Crossing, donated the 13.5 ton boulder.
According to Rebecca McCarter, Vice President of Public Relations for the Student Government Association, after receiving student feedback the SGA University Affairs committee approached the contractors. The contractors showed their support by donating the estimated $2,700 rock.
Installation took place on the morning of Feb. 21, 2009, when the spirit rock was placed at the intersection of Walton Drive and Price Drive, across from the Student Recreation Center.
McCarter said that the chosen location was a good distance from the original spirit rock and in a high-traffic area. This way, UNCW students can enjoy the eye-catching images on the rock.
Not only can students enjoy the spirit rock, but they can use it as a personal blank canvas. “All students and student organizations are allowed to use the Spirit Rock, but must abide by guidelines set forth in the Code of Student Life,” McCarter said.
Also noted in the Code of Student Life, each image on the spirit rock cannot be painted over for 24 hours.
The new spirit rock will be able to bask in the limelight on Thursday, March 26 when it is officially unveiled. This day also marks SGA’s “Teal Day.”
Chancellor Rosemary DePaolo and Alumni Board of Directors Jason Wheeler will be among the campus leaders that will take part in signing the “Teal Declaration.” The declaration will be one for the history books, as it proclaims for the first time that teal is UNCW’s official school color.
