Modern Spin of the classic ‘A Christmas Carol’

A new spin on Charles Dickens’ classic tale “A Christmas Carol” takes audiences through an animated adventure with the greedy Ebenezer Scrooge.

Audiences will once again meet the ghosts of past, present and future while they show him the grumpy and mean-spirited person he has become. Although many are not strangers to this story, the new 3-D animated version in theaters now offers a modern spin on this classical tale.

On Christmas Eve, Ebenezer Scrooge, played by Jim Carrey, is encountered by the ghost of his deceased friend and business partner, Joseph Marley. Marley, played by Gary Oldman, appears in haunting chains to warn Scrooge that if he does not change his ways, he will suffer the same fate. The three spirits will attempt to change Scrooge by showing him his past, present and future Christmases.

Although the movie is rated PG, some scenes prove to be frightening for younger audiences. In particular, the ghost of Christmas future is portrayed as a grim reaper-type figure who takes Scrooge to his dark and lonely future. Children under the age of 10 may not be able to handle some of these scarier scenes.

Jim Carrey, despite his comedic past, does a great job in his performance as the raspy Scrooge. He also portrays all three of the Christmas spirits, which somewhat resemble him in their own design. Joining Carrey are actors Gary Oldman, Bob Haskins, Colin Firth and Robin Wright Penn, all portraying multiple characters. Producer Robert Zemeckis, who has also produced movies such as “Beowulf” and “Polar Express,” is joined by Steve Starkey and Jack Rapke to create an excellent 3-D experience with good character design. This movie is the perfect choice for the holiday season.
