GloZell Comedy Show Nothing New But Still Enjoyable
From Kool-Aid hair to health care reform, GloZell Green has done it all and posted it on YouTube. If you haven’t watched one of her videos yet, you won’t be disappointed. The hilarious California native seems to spend her entire life on camera, inviting the world to watch her crack jokes.
UNCW students battled the rain Sept. 28 to hear GloZell do her stand-up routine at the ACE Comedy event in the Burney Center. As a longtime GloZell fan, I had been looking forward to the show since the beginning of the school year. I first became a fan after watching her numerous videos making fun of popular songs such as “Tik Tok” and “Alejandro.” However, her best-known video seems to be “My Push-Up Bra Will Help Me Get My Man.” Whenever someone asks me who GloZell is, I immediately tell him or her to watch this video that features GloZell driving to “meet Peter at the perk.”
Although GloZell is hilarious on YouTube, I have to admit that I was a little disappointed by her live show. I had already heard everything she joked about in one of her previous YouTube videos. It was still fun to hear it all live, but I wish she would have had some new jokes or new songs to make fun of. Hopefully most of the people in the audience weren’t GloZell YouTube video junkies like myself and hadn’t heard her material before.
Despite my initial disappointment, I still enjoyed the show. It was impressive how GloZell made everyone in the audience feel as if they had known her forever. She was very warm and welcoming, and she even brought a girl onstage and invited the audience to sing “Happy Birthday” to her. She also had several other girls come onstage to impersonate some of her funniest videos.
After the show, I waited in the hour-long meet and greet line while GloZell hugged people, signed autographs, called people’s friends and posed for pictures. Our group was the last to meet her, and after seeing over a hundred people, GloZell still treated us as if we were the first fans she had met all night.
Although some may argue that GloZell is not technically “famous,” I would beg to differ. For the past month, she has been on a meet and greet tour, rallying fans from all over the nation. According to her YouTube account, her videos have collectively been viewed over 41 million times. She even made a video during her show at UNCW, which I have yet to see on YouTube but hope she uploads soon.
Even though her jokes were a little disappointing, everyone who attended seemed to thoroughly enjoy the show and their time with GloZell. I commend ACE for bringing such a big YouTube celebrity and genuinely nice person to UNCW for this semester’s comedy show, and I hope they can bring someone just as big in the spring.
