Will brings LPGA experience to UNCW women’s golf team

The Seahawk interviewed former LPGA Tour champion Maggie Will, who is the newest addition to the UNC Wilmington women’s golf team. Will brings experience to the Seahawks and figures to be an asset to the program.

The Seahawk: What was your greatest moment while you were on the LPGA Tour?

Maggie Will: I would have to say my greatest moment on the tour was my first win in Las Vegas. It was a great win and helped get my career going in a positive way.

The Seahawk: What made you decide to get into coaching?

Maggie Will: I had no intentions of getting into coaching, but an opportunity came up to volunteer at Virginia Commonwealth University with the men’s team, and I ended up falling in love it. I love helping student athletes.

The Seahawk: As a former player, what do you feel you bring to the table as a coach?

Maggie Will: Well, I can understand what’s going through the girls minds because I’ve been there before. There is so much time to think in golf, so I try to help them think positive and fill their mind with good thoughts. Also, I feel I can help with course management and the short game.

The Seahawk: Do you enjoy coaching as much as playing?

Maggie Will: I would have to say yes, because of the great position I’m in at UNCW. I’ve always enjoyed helping others, and coaching lets me do this while taking off my past experiences. When I was younger and I was playing, that was the best, and now while I’m coaching, it’s the best.

The Seahawk: What did you enjoy most about coaching at NC State?

Maggie Will: I really enjoyed teaching the girls to learn their own game and to continue to improve. I loved helping the team turn a bad mindset on the course into a good one.

The Seahawk: Why did you decide to come to UNCW, and what are you most looking forward to?

Maggie Will: I spoke with (head) coach Cindy Ho and asked her if she needed some help, and she was more than willing to let me come on board. UNCW has a very talented golf team, and these girls are hungry to get better. I’m looking forward to seeing the team progress.

The Seahawk: Are you hoping to become a head coach one day?

Maggie Will: After playing, when I moved back from North Carolina from Florida, I thought that I would start coaching on the side to support my income for the next 10-12 years. But now I’m not sure. I love coaching and I’m not sure what’s next. I’ll have to evaluate my options and check out each opportunity when they arise. I’ve already been in the limelight, if you will, but if a school felt that I had enough experience and was prepared to be a head coach, I would have to evaluate that as well.
