Rethinking the bottom line with Jeremy Carter
Monday, Mar. 5, Jeremy S. Carter, resource development coordinator for the National Association for Latino Community Asset Building, spoke with students in a comprehensive discussion about the evolving nonprofit industry.
His company, NALCAB, is a national organization on a mission to build financial and real estate assets as well as human and technology resources in Latino families, communities and organizations.
Carter highlighted career opportunities for business-minded students who are interested in helping nonprofits through real estate development, consumer services and entrepreneurship or small business development.
“There is a large industry for real estate development in low income communities. We have several nonprofits that help get grants from the government and invest in foreclosure properties and homes and rebuild them to be used in Latino communities,” said Carter.
“Our nonprofit also helps with entrepreneurship and small business development through business incubators. We provide commercial kitchens and public or farmer’s markets for entrepreneurs to operate and work, but we offer cooperatives and storefront improvements to help entrepreneurs along the way to build their business and fill out paperwork,” said Carter.
He listed multiple large nonprofit corporations located in Arizona, Las Vegas and Michigan that all operated large public markets, various commercial centers, and had portfolios with more than 300 business partners to assist them in their projects.
In his role with the NALCAB, Carter works daily with nonprofits across the country seeking new means to economically stimulate low-income Latino and immigrant communities hit hard by the recent recession and struggling to overcome the wealth gap that divides the nation.
Carter’s main point was that there is a career to be made in nonprofit companies, and money can be made while making a difference in a community.
Carter is bilingual and received his Bachelor of Arts from UNC Wilmington and his Master of Arts from the University of Arizona’s Center for Latin American Studies where he focused on economic development and border studies.
Carter was a part of the International MBA Speakers Series for UNCW Presents. His presentation was sponsored by the Cameron School of Business, Department of Foreign Language and Literatures, Office of International Programs and Centro Hispano.
