Trending and transparent

Transparent clothing has been rocking the runway, making its way onto the red carpet and slowly forming a scene on Chancellors Walk.

As we all know, I ranted about see-through clothing once before, yet it has still nudged its way into college fashion—even I have a few sheer and lace outfits.

Although the see-through look is immensely popular, many people still do not know how to wear this trend properly. For example, if your bra is hanging out, put a tank top on. Do not let your bright pink bubblegum bra stick out from underneath a classy cream sheer blouse. That is not only degrading the blouse, but yourself as well. Have some respect and do it the right way.

So, what types of outfits can be worn with a bra and still be considered tasteful or socially acceptable?

Try a sheer double panel or double-breasted button-up with a dark colored or nude bra, depending on the blouse’s color. The panels will cover up your bra giving you the coverage you need while letting you feel sexy.

If you’re trying to go out in a sheer dress, try wearing a strapless bra, or, depending on how the fabric works, you could go braless. But when that doesn’t work, remember there are slips, tank tops and stick on breast cups available at most department stores.

Mesh and lace tops work a little differently. I would recommend wearing a tank top underneath most mesh ensembles, so the fishnet look doesn’t come off as tacky.

Lace is usually worn as intimate wear, but fashion has evolved and embraced lace by giving it more than one stereotypical identity. A lace dress, top or pant can be worn as a statement of sophistication or flirtation.

Colored lace, usually pastel, gives a feminine look that can be played up with accessories, like gold necklaces and large-face watches, or played down with a cute pair of shoes.

A black or white/cream lace dress is a perfect outfit to wear to dinner. The longer the length, the more elegant the ensemble. Black creates drama while cream comes off as soft and glowing.

Several boutiques around Wilmington carry the see-through look. Check out this sheer top covering a gold cut out top at Lure. Or go out in something form fitting and sexy like the Holy Roman dress from Edge of Urge. Either way, if done right, you’ll look awesome and ready to go out.
