Man runs back inside burning home for Xbox

Friday morning, a Kansas man and his roommate woke up to a fiery inferno that engulfed their house.

Battling the blaze, the duo safely made it outside, terrified and shocked.

John Reynolds forgot something important amid the flames, however. Valiantly, he ran back inside, dodging falling debris and raging fire, while inhaling smoke.

His efforts proved fruitful—his Xbox was saved. Microsoft would be proud.

All jokes aside, firefighters believe the fire was started by an electrical junction box, causing $80,000 worth of damages.

The dedicated gamer suffered smoke inhalation but is expected to be okay. But was his decision, risking his own life for a video game console really worth it?

It depends.

Slumped over on the tacky flower-patterned sofa, sweaty hands firmly holding the video game controller, chapped lips tightening, eyebrows furrowed, unblinking eyes glaring at the screen and perhaps, a little drool leaking from the right side of the bottom lip—we’re gamers who spend an enormous amount of time gaming. It’s what we do.

Our lives revolve around our consoles and many of us have irreplaceable memories on our consoles: whether it’s your high school prom, your wedding day, a birthday or even your pet’s birthday, these memories are priceless.

A few days after the incident, Reynolds finally came forward with his reasoning of going back in the house fire.

“To me, it was worth it because I have some irreplaceable things on there,” said Reynolds, “Like when my daughter was first born. I have photos on there that I can’t replace. My daughter means a lot to me, so I had to go back in there. I felt like I needed to go back in there and get that.”

I don’t have precious memories on my Xbox and if I were in a position like Reynolds, I would not have entered a burning building for it.

Technology is always evolving, always changing. In a few years, there will probably be another Xbox, maybe the Xbox 720 or Xbox Two. Sure, the Xbox costs a lot of money (Xbox One is $499!) but if there’s a chance I might not make back alive, then, I’d rather not risk it.

So was Reynolds crazy for running back inside for his Xbox? Absolutely. But was his reasoning logical? You bet.
