Halloween is right around the corner – which means costumes, candy and celebrations, but most importantly: Halloween movies!
If you’re planning a cozy night at home for Halloweekend, but aren’t sure what to watch, then you’re in luck! This year, The Seahawk is sharing their favorite Halloween movies, including everything from Disney’s Monstober throwbacks to horror films.
“HALLOWEENTOWN”
Emily Reier, Editor-in-Chief
“Halloweentown” is my favorite Halloween movie because it feels like stepping into the kind of Halloween I grew up with, warm, weird and wonderfully tacky. Watching Marnie discover she’s a witch and step into a world filled with quirky creatures, cozy autumn vibes and tacky Halloween decor felt like pure wonder when I was younger and, honestly, it still does. There’s something so comforting about the way the movie leans into its own weirdness and unmistakable ’90s charm that made Halloween feel like a season of possibility. Debbie Reynolds as Grandma Aggie, the warm family dynamics and the playful tone all wrap me in a blanket of nostalgia every time I watch.
As I’ve gotten older, the cheesy effects have become more obvious, the green screens, the clunky creature makeup, the props that look like they came from a school play. But they never lose their charm. If anything, they make the movie feel even more special, like a time capsule of simpler days when Halloween was about imagination and pure fun. Halloweentown isn’t just a movie, it’s a tradition and a reminder of how enchanted the world felt as a kid.
“SCREAM”
Sophie Barton, News Editor
Every year, when I feel the slightest chill in the air, I put “Scream” on the TV to kick off the Halloween season. Halloween has been my favorite time of year since I was a kid, and “Scream” has always been my first choice when it comes to spooky movies. I remember watching it for the first time in middle school at a sleepover with my friends, and I was hooked from that point on. I love the classic, campy ‘90s slasher vibe, and there’s no denying that the first scene is an iconic Halloween moment. One of my favorite things about “Scream” is that it’s “scary,” but also hilarious. The killers in the movie are just two ridiculous high school boys who cause their own demise, which I think is one of the charms of the movie. I find a sort of comfort in the old, and honestly bad, slasher movies from this era. They never fail to put me in the spooky season spirit!
“THE BOY WHO CRIED WEREWOLF”
Ashlynn Dziekiewicz, Culture Editor
My favorite Halloween movie is “The Boy Who Cried Werewolf.” I used to get so excited as a kid when I saw it was playing on Nickelodeon. I would rewatch it every year, and I would always feel so scared watching it. I especially related to the main character who was a vegetarian like me… until she became a werewolf.
“THE ADDAMS FAMILY/ THE ADDAMS FAMILY VALUES”
Max Matthews, Staff Writer
They’re creepy, kooky, mysterious and spooky… which is why they’re the perfect family to have on TV during the Halloween season! We all have a little bit of Wednesday Addams in us, and Christina Ricci gave us ladies the angsty, monotone performance that set the precedent for the goth girl inside us all. There were some close runners-up; “The Goonies,” “It,” “E.T.” and “Carrie” all have a special place in my heart, but the “Addams Family” is one of the only ones to seamlessly blend humor and horror, making it an unforgettable spooky staple.
“THE RING”
Jackson Howard, Staff Writer
“The Ring” was the first horror movie I ever watched back in sixth grade. With cinematography that serves as an obvious predecessor to the “‘Twilight’ filter,” this movie has a gloomy blue aesthetic that distinguishes it from most contemporary horror films and from the original 1998 Japanese film it’s based on. A stellar lead performance by Naomi Watts, an unsettling score by Hans Zimmer and a videotape with the most haunting imagery you’ve ever seen… there’s a reason I watch “The Ring” every Halloween season.
“GIRL VS. MONSTER”
Kaylin Brown, Staff Writer
My favorite Halloween movie is Disney Channel’s “Girl Vs. Monster.” Disney Channel Original Movies are super nostalgic for me, and “Girl Vs. Monster” was one of my obsessions as a child. I still listen to the soundtrack to this day! I love that the film focuses on a teenage girl supporting herself alongside her friends as well; it was very inspirational growing up, and movies like this helped me evolve into someone who isn’t overly reliant on others.
