The UNCW Men’s Soccer Seahawks were met with disappointment after a shut-out by the NC State Wolfpack, 3-0, on Wednesday, ending their three-game winning streak.
The team was looking to extend that streak, coming off a 1-0 victory against Mercer on Sept 27. Coming into Wednesday’s game, they had previous experience playing a high-seeded team, as they tied the then-best Wake Forest in a 3-3 away game on Sept 16.
Many of the spectators that made up the 2,463 in attendance — shattering the season-high record set against Mercer — were sporting red in support for the Wolfpack, but the Seahawks were determined to not let that get the best of them.
A 13th-minute goal from Donovan Phillip gave the Wolfpack a 1-0 lead throughout most of the game, followed by a 79th-minute goal from Caden Tolentino and a free kick goal from Riley Moloney with under two minutes left that helped seal their victory.
Despite 12 shots from the Seahawks, which continued their record of racking up double-digit shots in every game of the season thus far, they failed to prevent their opponents from reaching that status, something they had done five out of the eight previous games of the season.
With this loss, the Seahawks’ record went 3-4-2, while the Wolfpack improved 8-0-2.
