The Seahawk collected various opinions from UNCW community members to foster thoughtful, respectful dialogue regarding former Vice President Mike Pence’s invitation to speak at the Chancellor’s “Dare to Learn ” lecture. The following opinions represent various views from within the community.
“
“I believe that the decision of UNCW to host Mike Pence is concerning. Ultimately, I do believe that Pence would be a knowledgeable and interesting speaker. However, given the option of many other individuals, I find it strange that Pence would be the pick. Pence’s backing of Trump should not be forgotten, in a time where Trump has always been, and continues to be, a threat to American Democracy. I admire Pence for his actions on Jan 6. Fulfilling his constitutional duty should have been the bare minimum. He is not absolved of guilt for no longer backing Trump.”

“I believe that this is an opportunity for someone, a former vice president nonetheless, to present ideas that may challenge what many young people believe currently. One of the best ways to strengthen your ideas is to have them opposed, and you defend them. The former vice president on campus should be an exciting opportunity to ask questions to someone who was nearly at the top of our federal government. Finding common ground is something we should all be doing, and what better way than talking to a former VP?”

“I do not support Pence being chosen to speak at the upcoming event here at UNCW. His political record includes his opposition to the protections of the LGBTQ+ community, women and people of color. For many students including myself, this decision feels dismissive to our identity, and our experiences. Inviting a speaker whose views have harmed people from all different backgrounds and communities sends a clear message about whose voices and well-being is being prioritized here at UNCW. I think a speaker should’ve been chosen to uplift students and inspire them, no matter their race, gender, color, religion, sexuality or background. With the state of our country, and government, a speaker should’ve been a person who didn’t help alongside someone who is taking away so many rights and freedoms. I chose to come to this school for the diversity I was promised. Inviting someone like Pence goes against everything I was told this school stands for.”

“As a political science student, it’s really cool to hear a politician speak. No matter what party they are.”

“This is just an absolutely sickening joke right? In what world is Pence a good enough leader to come and speak at our school? It’s so disgraceful. The hate, prejudice and lack of morals he possessed to be a willful participant in the MAGA agenda. And now we want him speaking to the future of the American people? Despicable. Shameful. Intolerable behavior by UNCW. I am ashamed.”

“I think that politics just shouldn’t be involved in a learning speech, or any kind of open conversation involving college speeches. I believe it is inappropriate, and could make people offended, or hurt in a sense. Just like not putting religion on others, it is not right to have a man who is very one sided in politics attempt to teach students. He is not an educator nor a motivator. I am very disappointed in UNCW for even considering this man.”

“As a queer student, I feel it is insanely irresponsible and inappropriate to invite someone to campus who has extremely harmful views, including those of conversion therapy and more. There is a way to have speakers from the right or left who can give valuable information to both sides without inviting a human who does not believe in love and equality for all. There is nothing good about this man. I am disgusted that UNCW is choosing to ignore its students right now.”

“He is a former political leader. I want to hear from anyone who has served in office. End of story. There would be no outrage if it was a democrat. Ridiculous.”

“I’m really worried for the well-being of the students and faculty. Honestly, now is not the time to have political figures on our campus. I feel that our school should remain unbiased, and should not be inviting people who have a deep-rooted connection with any political party. There’s a lot of scary violence and hatred going on in our country and I don’t feel like this is the right way to go, if protecting the safety of the students is the biggest priority.”
