Singer-songwriter Nikki Falk’s artistry is evident in her indie-folk music where she connects her emotions to refreshingly creative lyricism. Her lyrical brilliance and soft folk sound shine in her upcoming debut album, “Fighter Dog.”
Falk, a twenty-four year old independent artist, constructs music from her emotions and experiences in a very deliberate way. She said, “It’s very authentic and raw and comes from a real place that’s very vulnerable. It’s kind of meant to just make you really feel something.” Her music is a creative space for her to explore new depths of emotion. “So, when I experience emotions so deeply [songwriting] is an outlet and a way that I can experience it even fuller. It feels like I’m experiencing being a human to the biggest capacity in terms of emotions,” said Falk.
Gentle and openly vulnerable, to listen to Falk’s music is to witness the exposition of her soul. She said, “I had a show recently where I played my new record live, and it was so gut-wrenchingly raw that it felt like everyone was looking at my biggest secrets and — I don’t know — it felt like a little much. But, also, seeing the way that people responded to it was worth it a million times.” Despite how uncomfortable it was for her to face her audience with such honesty, Falk did so courageously.

Falk’s upcoming album is entitled “Fighter Dog.” The album will tackle an event in Falk’s life where she was made to question her entire belief system. The new album will explore “a breakup and what it feels like to be manipulated and controlled, largely in a spiritual context. I had gone to church for a large portion of my life and the person I trusted — and was the most important person in my life — introduced me to a side of the church that was painful.” Her debut album will delve deep into the complex emotions of her reevaluation of her own outlook and belief system.
While the album will tackle some somber topics, Falk has also left room on the record for some more emotionally upbeat songs. “There are a few happy songs in there!” said Falk, “Ones about the women in my life, and the earth and things like that.” The lead single of her album, “June Blue,” is a celebration of earth and the beauty of childhood.
“June Blue” is a beautiful piece on the nostalgia of the freedom and safety of Falk’s childhood summers. “Those are just really special parts of your childhood that I feel are so sacred and the times in my life where I’ve felt the most safe I’ve ever felt,” said Falk, “It’s about the earth being a spiritual safety net for me after my leaving the church and finding God in the trees and the hills.”

Falk reminisced on the feelings behind June Blue, saying, “Remembering my childhood, I thought, ‘Wow, maybe so much of the safety I felt when I was a kid was because I was actually outside, in the earth and experiencing that spirituality and God on that level.’”
Popularity is not Falk’s primary career goal; her goal is to create art that is entirely true to herself. She said, “That’s the sole mission of my music — to be very genuine in it. Even if that means I don’t get anywhere with my songs or in my career — as long as I’m being genuine with it, that’s all that I care about.” Her authenticity has clearly resonated with an audience, however, as she has earned about 15,000 monthly listeners on Spotify.
The Maui-born and raised artist is currently living in San Diego, Calif. “I’ve been able to meet people and have really genuine connections here, and it doesn’t feel like I’m networking — nothing disingenuous, it’s all very loving and it’s a community of artists working together,” Falk said. She is a graduate of University of California Santa Barbara, where she pursued global studies.
Falk’s favorite album is the critically acclaimed For Emma, Forever Ago by Bon Iver released in 2007. Right now, she is listening to lots of folk music, especially artists like Toledo, Pinegrove, Hovvdy and Elliot Smith.
Falk announced via her Instagram that the title track of her album, “Fighter Dog,” will be released July 11. Her full album is expected to be released in the coming months.
