Vivi Rincon launched her music career with the 2022 release of her hit single “if we lived on the moon.” The song has garnered over 3 million streams on Spotify. The song took on an identity of its own across social media platforms as a queer love anthem. “I will always lean into my queerness, always, because that’s who I am. I’m a lesbian and I love it,” said Rincon. Rincon is currently curating a new sound for herself and working full-time as an artist in Los Angeles.
In 2023, Rincon graduated from Berklee College of Music with a degree in songwriting. She said, “Through Berklee, I know songwriting inside and out; just everything about it.” In college she took classes on songwriting in many different genres and styles. She believes this has prepared her for her current work writing songs for herself as well as other singers.
Following the release of her indie-pop debut EP “crash landing” in 2023, Rincon released three new singles in 2024. These most recent releases have a noticeably different sound than “if we lived on the moon” and “crash landing.” She describes her new sound as being “in the rock space, kind of like alternative, shoegaze-y.” She credits the rock artists she listened to growing up—The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Maná, Nirvana and Death Cab for Cutie—for inspiring her recent foray into the indie-rock genre. She also expressed her love of the “emo” sounds of artists like Maggie Lindemann and Twenty One Pilots. “I’ve always been a rocker at heart,” Rincon said.
Her process for writing songs and creating music tends to be fun and collaborative. “It just happens very organically. That’s my favorite way of writing – it happens fast and naturally and it’s a banger,” Rincon said. Rincon’s girlfriend, Rachel, produced her first single “if we lived on the moon.” Since then, Rincon has worked with several other producers, which she felt has been a great experience. Now, she and Rachel are back to working together again. “I feel like I’m back home because my girlfriend produced ‘if we lived on the moon’ and then I kind of branched out, and now I’m like ‘Rachel, let’s get back to it!’,” said Rincon. Rincon is planning to work on creating new music this summer with her girlfriend.
Following the release of her EP “crash landing,” Rincon had to take a small step back from creating her own music. She said, “I went through a period of time where I stopped loving music and dancing… And now recently I’m coming back to music, and I’m doing it for fun.” Rincon has also been open in past interviews about how she had to quit dance for several years because her relationship with it had become too unhealthy, but now she is jumping back into music, and dance, with her whole heart. She said, “I had a quarter life crisis moment, where I was like ‘I love dancing. I love making music. I’m going to do both. I don’t have to choose.’” She has been taking classes in theater-style dance and plans to audition for drama productions soon.
With her newest singles “Smaller,” “Pesticide” and “Saint,” Rincon has established herself within the indie-rock genre. It will be exciting to see her journey into rock continue this year.
