The Seahawk book club is spending December break in contemplation with a pick fresh off the press. This month’s selection is “Bigger Than Bravery: Black Resilience and Reclamation in a Time of Pandemic,” edited by Valerie Boyd.

“Bigger Than Bravery” is UNCW-affiliated press Lookout Books’ newest title. The book’s launch was a highlight of this year’s Writer’s Week at UNCW. Published on Nov. 15, Publishers Weekly already named it Big Indie Book of Fall. “Bigger Than Bravery” combines narrative essays and poetry to craft a portrait of the Black experience during the pandemic. Contributions from Tayari Jones, Kiese Laymon, Imani Perry, Deesha Philyaw, Jason Reynolds, Alice Walker and more create a collaborative narrative that distinguishes the work in the literary sphere.

In Valerie Boyd’s words, “Bigger Than Bravery” is a “first draft of history,” exploring the intersection between the COVID-19 pandemic and systemic racism. The book examines themes of community, courage and hope, among others. It is a complex read sure to stir readers both creatively and personally.
