Women’s soccer defeats Elon in conference opener

ELON, North Carolina – UNCW women’s soccer (3-2) defeated the Elon Phoenix (1-1) 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Rudd Field 

Despite an even number of shots on goal for both teams with eight each, the Seahawks were able to get a couple more in the back of the net to secure a victory against the Phoenix.  

Redshirt junior forward Morgan Nanni scored the first goal of the game for the Seahawks in the 18th minute, assisted by freshman midfielder Madison Henry. Nanni then scored her second goal shortly into the second half with a penalty kick in the 47th minute. The Phoenix got on the scoreboard in the 63rd minute with a goal by senior midfielder/forward Carson Jones. However, the Seahawks gave themselves a safety goal in the 69th minute with a corner kick from senior midfielder Audrey Harding to junior defender Talia Parrous, who scored with a header.  

Parrous became the eighth different player to score for UNCW this season.  

The game was physical, with Elon committing 15 fouls and UNCW committing nine. Phoenix forward/midfielder Bethany Harford received a yellow card at the 47-minute mark, and midfielder/forward Carson Jones received one two minutes later. Seahawk midfielder Madison Henry also received a yellow card in the 74th minute.  

Seahawk freshman goalkeeper Blair Barefoot tallied three saves, and Elon freshman goalkeeper McKenna Dalfonso made two.  

UNCW will return to Wilmington on Saturday March 20, to take on College of Charleston (0-5-1) at 6 p.m. in the UNCW Soccer Stadium.
