Women’s soccer defeats Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina – UNCW women’s soccer (1-1-0) won their road match against Charlotte 3-1 Sunday afternoon at Transamerica Field.

The Seahawks jumped out to an early lead with a goal off of a penalty kick by redshirt junior forward Morgan Nanni in the 14th minute. Nanni is the sixth player in UNCW history to score multiple penalty kick goals in a career. Senior midfielder Audrey Harding then pushed the Seahawk lead to two with her first goal of the season in the 40th minute. UNCW went into the half with the two-point lead, but freshman forward Hayley Magnussen gave the team an extra cushion with a goal in the 46th minute, also her first goal of the season. The 49ers did manage one goal in the 55th minute, with a pass from freshman Piper Biziorek to junior Michaella Arteta.

The game was evenly matched in regards to shots on goal, both teams taking 13. Seahawk redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Anna Johnston and freshman goalkeeper Blair Barefoot worked together for a combined six saves, while Charlotte’s goalkeepers tallied four.

UNCW will play their first home game of the season next Sunday, Feb. 28 against Coastal Carolina with kick off set for 1 p.m.
