At a Halloween gathering this past weekend, UNC Wilmington (UNCW) Carly Rae Baron was shot and later passed away from her injuries, according to reports from WWAY. Baron was a junior in the communication studies department who transferred to UNCW this past summer.

Wilmington police initially responded to a nearby noise complaint and arrived to the scene after hearing gunshots per reports from Fox Wilmington. 

21-year-old Jaquan Cortez Jackson, a suspect in this case, has since been taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder, per reports from Fox Wilmington. 

Since learning of her passing, a fellow UNCW student and friend of Baron, Jordyn Baker, created a GoFundMe, benefitting Baron’s family which has raised over $9,400 and counting.

According to an email sent out by the university, Baron’s service details can found on her online obituary.
