At a Halloween gathering this past weekend, UNC Wilmington (UNCW) Carly Rae Baron was shot and later passed away from her injuries, according to reports from WWAY. Baron was a junior in the communication studies department who transferred to UNCW this past summer.

Wilmington police initially responded to a nearby noise complaint and arrived to the scene after hearing gunshots per reports from Fox Wilmington

21-year-old Jaquan Cortez Jackson, a suspect in this case, has since been taken into custody and charged with second-degree murder, per reports from Fox Wilmington

Since learning of her passing, a fellow UNCW student and friend of Baron, Jordyn Baker, created a GoFundMe, benefitting Baron’s family which has raised over $9,400 and counting.

According to an email sent out by the university, Baron’s service details can found on her online obituary.

Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to reach out to UNCW’s Counseling Center to get support if needed.
