New Hanover County recently announced efforts to help locals get their flu shots this fall. According to a press release released by the county, they will be working in collaboration with New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC) and Cape Fear Community College (CFCC) to offer free flu shots to local residents.

On Saturday, Oct. 24, county residents will be able to stop by the CFCC student parking lot by the Schwartz Center. 500 vaccines will be able and the flu thru will run from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. or until vaccines run out. People receiving the vaccine do not even have to worry about getting out of their car as staff will give the vaccine through the car window. There will also be a walk-up option.

Due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, medical professionals are stating the increased importance of getting a flu shot this season, in order to deter the possibility of people contracting both the flu and COVID-19 and or making themselves more susceptible to the virus.

“Not only are these exercises important to keep us prepared for future events and the evolving COVID-19 pandemic, but getting your flu vaccine is an important strategy in limiting the impact of COVID-19 during cold and flu season,” said New Hanover County Assistant Health Director Carla Turner, RN, MSHCA. “It’s imperative that anyone and everyone who can, get their flu shot to protect themselves and others and to prevent overburdening our healthcare system with COVID-19 and influenza at the same time.”

Participants are asked to wear short sleeves or to roll up long sleeves to their shoulders.

To combat the spread of COVID-19, volunteers and staff will be wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE) and participants will be given masks.

In addition to offering free vaccines, the county is also collecting old medications.

“All medications, syringes, e-cigarette and vaping devices with batteries removed will be accepted for disposal. No appointment, insurance, ID or proof of residency is required; and Spanish and ASL interpreters will be available,” as stated in the press release.
