WILMINGTON — Per release from the Colonial Athletic Association, all winter and spring CAA sports have been officially cancelled for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.

“Following extensive discussions with the conference’s institutional administrators, in light of new developments and in an attempt to mitigate the further spread of the coronavirus, the Colonial Athletic Association has decided to cancel all conference and non-conference competitions for the remainder of the winter and spring sports seasons,” said CAA Associate Commissioner Rob Washburn in a release.

It was also announced that an official from the UNCW-Drexel game on March 7 tested positive for the illness. In accordance with CDC guidelines, 25 people who were present at the game — 12 student-athletes and 13 staff members — are currently self-quarantining off campus for the recommended 14-day window. That time period extends to March 21.

The news comes following the NCAA’s cancellation of the 2020 winter and spring NCAA championships, the most discussed of which being the 2020 NCAA men’s basketball tournament.

There are currently almost 144,000 cases of coronavirus worldwide, with nearly 2,000 of those coming from the United States — 41 of which have resulted in fatality. 17 cases of COVID-19 have been reported in North Carolina.
