Advice from Sally Seahawk 10/30/19 (Exhaustion, healthy eating and boyfriend drama)

I always end up feeling tired even with good sleep. How does this happen?
So, this is an unfortunate reality for many college students. Stress can cause you to feel tired no matter how long you sleep. Additionally, you may want to rethink some of your lifestyle choices. For instance, if you are drinking a lot of caffeine, you should probably dial it back. If your sleep schedule is all over the place, then you need to find a rhythm so that your body does not go a suspicious amount of time without proper rest. Often times I find that when I sleep longer than normal after a very intense week, I feel more tired than I had prior to falling asleep. What I am going to say next may be offensive, but you asked for this (literally): a diet of Cookout and Chick-fil-A will not do your body well. You will naturally feel more sluggish, tired and exhausted. Eating fruits and veggies and limiting your fast food intake will give you more energy. When in doubt, diet and exercise is always the way to go. To exercise, you do not have to go to the gym if you are pressed for time; just make smaller changes like taking the stairs instead of the elevator or taking the long route to class. Do not worry, hun. I can assure you that every student you see on campus is probably just as tired as you are.

How can I eat healthy on campus?
This is a really good question. All college students on campuses around the world complain about their school’s food. However, being at UNCW means that you are one of the lucky ones. I do not know if this makes you feel better or worse, but we are fortunate enough to go to a university with a plethora of gluten free, vegetarian and vegan options. One of my favorite spots to eat at on campus is Jole Mole, and typically I will get the taco salad with no queso and veggies instead of meat. This meal is significantly lighter than a beef burrito or chicken tacos. Green Spot’s menu has so much variety—peruse their options and just see if anything new interests you. Dub’s Cafe and Wagoner Dining Hall both offer sandwiches, soups, salads and lighter food options. If you live on the freshman wing of campus and your eatery of choice is The Hub, never fear: you can opt for a lettuce wrap. There are options everywhere—you have just got to be creative!

How do I tell my best friend that I am tired of hearing her boyfriend drama?
Ooof. Now this is heavy. I think we all can admit that there has been a point in our life where we were labeled as the “annoying friend that never listens to advice.” We are only human, and if your feelings are hurt (or even worse, your pride), that can be a lot to get over. As a best friend, you are not only a ride-or-die, but you are the person they turn to for complete honesty. If you are over your friend ignoring your advice and complaining about things that they very well could have avoided, tell them how you feel. Let them know that you are always going to be there for them, but you are not about to keep running on the hamster wheel with them. It does not make you a bad friend for knowing your limits and keeping others accountable.
