The air was full of music and nostalgia as the Wilmington Symphonic Winds performed their concert “John Williams: At The Movies” in Kenan Auditorium on Feb. 24.

Conducted by Dominic Talanca, the concert focused on arrangements by legendary movie composer John Williams, with selections from films such as “Star Wars,” “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” and “E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.” Each piece was preceded by the presentation of a movie trailer of the film for which the music was written.

The show began with Williams’ arrangement of “The Star-Spangled Banner” for the 2004 Rose Bowl. It was shortly followed by the main title theme from “Star Wars,” complete with costumed members from the 501st Legion Carolina Garrison, an international fan-run Star Wars costuming group, parading up and down the aisles dressed as stormtroopers, Boba Fett and Darth Vader.

Following performances showcased the intricacies of Williams’ composing in each situation, such as the dulcet klezmer tones of “Theme from Schindler’s List,” the peppy Irish folkloric melodies of the excerpts from “Far and Away,” and the whimsical and magical sound of “Harry’s Wondrous World” from “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.”

Special moments from the performance included guest conductor Dr. Nicholas Enrico Williams leading “The Flight to Neverland” from “Hook,” violinist Dr. Danijela Žeželj-Gualdi performing as a guest artist during “Theme from Schindler’s List,” and a surprise off-program piece called “To The Stars” by composer Randy Edelman for the film “Dragonheart.”

“The performance was amazing. It was like listening to my childhood. I’ve grown up with most of the movies and soundtracks they played from, and it was unreal to hear them live,” said Katie Ewing, a Wilmington resident. “I had goosebumps. It was an amazing experience.”
