Gaga’s roof shenanigans

Lady Gaga appeared at the top of NRG Stadium in Houston to kick off the halftime show of Super Bowl LI. Her eye opening performance was highlighted by renditions of “God Bless America” and “This Land is Your Land,” as well as her hit songs “Poker Face” and “Telephone”.  Gaga showed off her musical talent by using a keytar, a keyboard in guitar form, for “Just Dance” and her athletic ability by jumping off the stage at the end of her performance.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the six time Grammy winner’s performance was the opening scene. That giant American flag that forms behind Gaga as she sings atop the roof? 300 drones courtesy of Intel’s Shooting Star drone squad, reported Wired.

Many have asked how exactly Gaga managed to jump off the roof of the stadium with millions watching. The short answer, it was prerecorded. According to USA Today, Intel and Lady Gaga filmed the opening scene on January 30th

Citing the possibility of inclement weather and FAA regulations on drone usage, Intel general manager Natalie Cheung also said, “from a logistics and creative perspective, it’s a bit hard for her to go from the roof all the way down to the floor of the stadium.”

According to Wired, FAA regulations ban drones from within 34.5 miles of NRG Stadium and limit how high they can fly. USA Today reported that in order to get past this, the team at Intel had to communicate with the FAA and the air traffic control at Houston’s Hobby Airport to get clearance.

When halftime began, the video of Gaga on top of the roof began running; to television viewers she was actually on the roof. In reality, she was suspended midair; camera crews were waiting for the moment in the video where she jumped off the roof to actually begin recording her.

Putting that let down aside, it was still pretty impressive to watch Lady Gaga on top of a football stadium singing a Woody Guthrie classic. Her jumping skills are impressive too, maybe the Cleveland Browns will send a scout out to one of her world tour concerts.
