Clubs connect students to campus life
The many campus clubs give students a chance to meet and learn outside the classroom.
There are approximately 130 clubs and organizations that UNCW has to offer the student population. They range from the Sailing Club to the Break Dancing Club to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
“Students can really get a better sense of the university community as well as the surrounding Wilmington community by being involved,” Tri Beta President Valerie Winkelmann said. “If you are active in even one organization you can benefit greatly by getting to know other people.”
Among the many organizations, there are academic clubs and honor societies like the Political Science club, the Honors Scholars Association and Tri Beta, a biological honor society. Honor societies boost resumes and allow students to meet others in their field of study.
“We do service projects and there are plenty of opportunities for applying for scholarships through the club,” Winkelmann said.
Media organizations are also offered through the University. The Atlantis, The Seahawk and Student Body Television are just a few of the media related groups.
“Student media is the best way to get involved because you meet everybody on this campus, ” Seahawk Editor-in-Chief Megan O’Brien said. “It also looks really good on your resume, even if you don’t intend to go into journalism or advertising, because it shows you have hands-on experience outside of the classroom.”
Crew, ultimate frisbee, baseball, skim boarding and sailing are a few of the campus sport clubs.
“Most of the people in the club are beginner level and it’s really for anyone who wants to learn skim boarding and improve their skills,” Skim Club President Scott Hayes said.
There are many clubs dedicated to serving the community in specialized ways, including Global SERVE, the Rotaract Club, the Alpha Phi Omega, the Circle K International club and the Student Council for Exceptional Children.
A few of the ethnic organizations are the International Student Organization, African-American, Hispanic, Asian, Native-American (AHANA), Organization of Latin American Students (OLAS), the Asian Student Association, the Black Student Union, and the Student Indian Cultural Association.
There are numerous religious groups on campus, like Campus Crusade for Christ and Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Baha’i Club, Latter-Day Saint Student Association, Campus Christian Fellowship, Fellowship of Christian University Students (FOCUS), and the Baptist Student Union.
UNCW hosts a variety of special interest clubs as well, including the Break Dancing Club, the Cheerleading organization, the Lumina Dance Club, BGLAD (Bisexuals, Gays, Lesbians, and Allies of Diversity), the Yoga Club, the Screamin’ Seahawks, and the UNCW Orientation Leaders.
“By being involved on campus it gives you a sense of belonging to the actual university and student community,” Lumina Dance Club President Willard Lee said.
