UNCW Greeks unite to build Habitat Home
For the first time ever, every Greek organization at UNCW will unite to participate in a service project. Over a total of 11 Saturdays, these students will build a home for a mother and her three children. The house, which is located at 1203 South 5th Street, will be completed in March 2002.
“The house is going to be built by March, which is good because the Greeks will be able to see the house before they leave at the end of the semester,” said Stacy Cross, coordinator for Greek affairs.
Each Saturday one sorority and one fraternity will represent the Greek community by building the house, as well as providing lunch for the workers. This project is sponsored by the residents of the Landfall community and has been dubbed, “Friends of Habitat House.”
The idea for a campus-wide service project evolved last year by Alpha Gamma Delta President Landon Weinbach and Sigma Phi Epsilon member Kenny Helms. “We wanted a chance for the sororities to work with the fraternities that would be positive for the community,” Helms said.
The groundbreaking ceremony took place Nov. 10 at 10 a.m. Julie Patterson, president of Sigma Sigma Sigma, was one of the few people given the opportunity to break the ground. “Five people from each Greek chapter, five Landfall representatives, as well as the family that will be living in the house were all present,” she said.
The Greeks were so enthusiastic about this project that they plan to also participate in a second project.
“We’re planning on doing the Holiday Wish Program for the Christmas season,” said Jonathan Glazebrook, Theta Chi member and Interfraternity Council president.
Although this is the first Greek-wide charity project in which the Greeks have been involved, each fraternity and sorority is involved with their own individual charity.
