WILMINGTON, North Carolina - The Seahawks blew through their exhibition match opponents on Wednesday night with an 88-47 routing of Emory & Henry to set up one of the most anticipated games in UNCW basketball history. On Monday, UNCW men’s basketball will travel to Chapel Hill to take on the top-ranked team in the country, the North Carolina Tar Heels.
The October 2022 issue of WILMA, Wilmington’s premier women’s magazine, features the 35 finalists selected for WILMA’s 2022 Women to Watch Awards. Since 2012, the Awards have been an annual celebration of female leaders in the Wilmington community. This year’s finalists reflect a variety of achievements in seven categories: arts, business, education, health, nonprofit and volunteer, public sector and rising star. Among them, four are UNCW faculty, chosen out of almost 300 nominations across Wilmington.
On Sept. 27, 2022, UNCW’s Student Government Association unanimously passed a resolution vocalizing support for increased accessibility to childcare for UNCW’s students, faculty and staff. This resolution, coauthored by Student Body President Hannah-Valentina Horowitz and Student Services Chair Halie Walker, offers a first step toward on-campus childcare, a long-standing issue for UNCW.
On Friday, April 22, Chancellor Sartarelli delivered his final address and 28th report to the UNCW Board of Trustees at their quarterly meeting. The chancellor’s retirement in June will end his nearly seven years of employment at the university, during which UNCW experienced the highest rate of growth in the UNC system. Sartarelli’s time as chancellor has been marked by both academic and economic successes as well as social backlash and controversy.
"Along For The Ride” is a heartfelt adaptation of Dessen’s novel that pulls at our heartstrings to tell a passionate coming-of-age story about spiritual independence. Wilmington and its sibling towns help bring the film’s setting to life while capturing lighthearted teen culture. The film is one of the better YA films in recent memory and one that paints a vivid picture of North Carolina.
With no wetsuit, Nelson completed the swim against 12 mph winds, an incoming tide and 66 F ocean water with a total time of seven hours and four minutes. Wetsuits not only serve as a tool to warm the body in cold water temperatures, but also add a small amount of buoyancy which can greatly assist in open water swimming. All of these factors on top of the great distance Nelson covered in the water is hard to fathom, but Nelson simply said, “A recon Marine would rather die than quit.”
UNCW’s chapter of the Plastic Ocean Project organization, a nonprofit local to Wilmington, is one of the largest clubs on campus. Its eco-friendly focus attracts like-minded students in the pursuit of personal and public involvement with key environmental issues. UNCW POP balances camaraderie and fun in meetings with activism through organized events, contributing to UNCW’s reputation as a sustainable campus. With this school year drawing to a close, the club’s leadership is under transition for the 2022-2023 year. Emily Willis will serve as the new president of UNCW POP.
An ordinance was proposed in New Hanover County last month that aimed to deter homeless people from camping out on county property, including the Wilmington Public Library downtown. Sleeping would have been prohibited between 10 p.m. and 7 a.m., and items left for more than two hours would be discarded. The ordinance initially included a $50 fine for violations, but this was soon removed. Violators of the ordinance could have been removed by law enforcement and prosecuted for trespassing, although government officials did state that this would be used as a “last resort.”
‘Harry’s Game,’ named after Heaney’s son who has down syndrome, has been a charitable event that has become increasingly popular in the Wilmington community over the years, which has also had a positive impact on Harry.
This year's midterm election carries uneasiness and uncertainty for future control in the House of Representatives. All 435 House seats are open for this year’s election, with each party seeking the needed 218 seats to gain a House majority. Recent redistricting controversies in the state have complicated the election even more.

In the midst of the pandemic, when the world shut down, McClure began the pursuit of his modeling career. He found inspiration in his mother who had herself worked in the modeling industry. Prompted by her encouragement, McClure reached out to “Directions USA,” the largest agency across North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia.
